IAF Aerobatic Display in Chennai Attracts Thousands, But Five Spectators Tragically Die

An impressive aerial display by the Indian Air Force (IAF) over Marina Beach attracted a large crowd on Sunday. Unfortunately, five spectators lost their lives due to extreme exhaustion. A senior police official confirmed that one person died on the beach, while four others passed away nearby. All five were among the thousands who gathered along the extensive shoreline to witness the event.

Tragedy at IAF Air Show in Chennai

Thousands of people stood under the scorching sun for hours, with many using umbrellas for shade. Despite the air show taking place between 11 am and 1 pm, most attendees arrived at least an hour earlier. Several individuals fainted, and emergency workers provided assistance, transporting them to shelters. Over 30 people were taken to nearby hospitals with dehydration symptoms.

Traffic and Crowd Management

After the event, major roads near the beach were heavily congested. Public transport, including local trains and buses, was overcrowded. The bus stop at Anna Square was particularly packed. Due to traffic restrictions, people had to walk long distances to reach transport options. Although a stampede-like situation arose as crowds exited simultaneously, police managed to control the situation and ensured ambulances could pass safely.

The air show began with IAF's Special Garud Force commandos showcasing their skills in a simulated rescue operation. Para jump instructors landed precisely on target areas, captivating spectators. The 92nd IAF Day celebration took place between the Lighthouse and Chennai Port, attended by dignitaries like Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin.

Highlights of the Air Show

The clear skies offered an excellent view of nearly 72 aircraft participating in the display, which is set to enter the Limca Book of World Records. Aircraft like Rafale performed formation flights, releasing flares. Heritage planes Dakota and Harvard, along with Tejas and SU-30, also participated. The Sukhoi Su-30 executed a "Loop-tumble-yaw" manoeuvre while dispensing flares.

The Suryakiran aerobatic team also took to the skies to entertain the crowd. The indigenously made Light Combat Aircraft Tejas and Light Combat Helicopter Prachand participated in this Chennai event after 21 years. This was only the third time such an event occurred outside Delhi; previous shows were held in Prayagraj and Chandigarh.

Concluding Performances

The grand finale featured a stunning performance by the Sarang helicopter display team. The Rafale demonstrated its refuelling capability, while Dakota's flight was a visual treat. Aircraft formations were named Kanchi, Nataraj, Dhanush, Marina, and Nilgiris. Chief Minister Stalin expressed gratitude on social media for the spectacular show by IAF heroes.

A defence release stated that over 1.5 million people witnessed this vibrant performance by India's air warriors with more than 72 aircraft involved. The beachfront and rooftops from Kovalam to Ennore were filled with spectators eager to see this airshow return after 21 years. This is one of the largest air shows ever held outside Delhi since it moved three years ago to allow other cities' residents to experience it.
