Mumbai, Aug 27: 24-year-old Sheena Bora had gone missing in 2012. However, no missing complaint was filed. Her brother Mikhail Bora, step-father Peter Mukerjea and all others were told that Sheena had gone to US.
It was Sheena's mother Indrani Mukerjea who told everyone about Sheena and her visit to US. However, Mikhail was suspicious about Sheena's sudden decision to move to US.
He once had confronted Indrani questioning about Sheena's whereabouts as he did not receive any call or message from his sister. However, Indrani snubbed his queries and stopped communicating with Mikhail and her parents who live in Guwahati, Assam.
Indrani once had shown Sheena's picture to her husband, Peter Mukerjea, the former CEO of Star India network. She claimed that the picture was taken during a diwali party in New York.
Peter at that time was not aware that Sheena was Indrani's daughter. The media baron was told that Sheena was Indrani's sister. He was relieved to know that Sheena had gone to US as she was involved in a romantic relation with his son Rahul Mukerjea.
After three years, Mumbai Police suddenly arrested Indrani Mukerjea and revealed a sensational murder case of Sheena Bora.
How did Mumbai Police crack Sheena Bora murder case?
Rakesh Maria asked his junior officials to start investigating the case. Police did not confront Indrani or any other person but put everyone under surveillance.
After monitoring Indrani and her driver's movement for three months, investigating officers were convinced that something had wrong with Sheena Bora.
On Aug 21, police arrested Indrani's driver Shyam Rai in connection with an illegal arms case. After taking him into their custody, police started interrogating the driver who later confessed that he had killed Sheena Bora in 2012.
Later he also told police that Indrani was the mastermind and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna was also present at the moment when Sheena was strangled to death.
Based on the information received from Shyam Rai, police arrested Indrani Mukerjea from her residence in Mumbai on Aug 25. Later she confessed to her crime.
A day after Indrani's arrest, police arrested her former husband (second marriage) Sanjeev Khanna from Kolkata. According to TV reports, Khanna was yet to confess to his crime.
What did the accused tell police about the murder?
Indrani and her driver reportedly police that she was upset with Sheena who was having an affair with her step-son Rahul. So, she decided to kill her daughter taking help from her driver and her former husband.
She killed Sheena in a car which was parked at Peter's garage overnight. The next day, they burnt her body and disposed it off at a jungle in Raigad near Mumbai.
Difficulties for Mumbai Police:
Mumbai Police have been finding it difficult to gather evidence against Indrani and others. One foreseeable problem is the lack of DNA evidence.
Indrani's driver took investigating officials to the spot where they buried Sheena's body. It was revealed that Raigad police had found a burnt body at the same place and at the same time.
At that time, the police dismissed the body as unclaimed and conducted the last rites.
