How PM Modi's Bold Steps Prevented India From Becoming The Next Bangladesh – Find Out Now!
The world is watching developments in Bangladesh in astonishment. A sitting prime minister dethroned and asked to leave within 45 minutes. This might come as a dejavu moment for some African nations, but for Bangladesh it was a writing on the wall.
In the initial year of Sheikh Hasina's fifth term in Bangladesh, the violent protests against government job reservations were reminiscent of similar unrest in India. Remember the Mandal Commissiom protests back in the 80s!

Cut to PM Modi's tenure starting 2014. From demonetisation to the farmers' movement, large sections of the Indian population have shown discontent with government decisions. However, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India faced these challenges directly and achieved success. When the BJP, led by Narendra Modi, assumed power in 2014, it garnered significant public support. Voters placed their trust in 'Brand Modi' and since then, the Modi government has been taking the challenges head on.
Despite widespread opposition to some decisions, the Modi government managed to transform this dissent into a people's movement. With substantial public backing, they have navigated through turbulent times.
Let's take a look at some of the crucial pressure points for Modi govt that could have put the government in a spot, but eventually the NDA government sailed through safely.
The debate arises from statements made by opposition leaders drawing parallels between Bangladesh situation and India. Congress leader Salman Khurshid remarked, "What is happening in Bangladesh can also happen here...". National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah also commented on India's current system, saying, "Students started a movement that could not be controlled by anyone... This is a lesson. Not just for Bangladesh, but for every dictator."
Protest Over Delhi Coaching Centre Deaths

As Bangladesh was battling the students' protests in the month of July this year, a similar protest was brewing in central Delhi. Three students had died at a UPSC coaching centre due to waterlogging and the students were up in arms against the Delhi govt, Delhi Municipality and the coaching centres.
Delhi L-G immediately formed a panel to frame guidelines to regulate coaching centres. Suggestions were mooted to create an education hub by relocating coaching institutes to areas like Narela, Rohini and other locations
This and other timely measures helped placate the students' ire.
Agniveer Protests

Nearly two years ago in 2022, the Union government introduced the Agnipath scheme, a forward-thinking reform aimed at modernising recruitment for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.
This new approach replaced traditional recruitment methods, allowing for a more flexible and efficient process. Under Agnipath, 75% of recruits will transition out after four years with a robust financial package, ensuring both career and financial security.
Despite initial protests and challenges, Prime Minister Modi's decisive intervention successfully quelled the unrest, demonstrating his commitment to both progress and stability. The scheme faced political demands for review from BJP allies, reflecting its transformative impact on the defense sector and its broader implications on political dynamics.
Demonetisation

Demonetisation in 2016 was one of the Modi government's first major decisions, impacting over 1.3 billion people. The sudden move left the nation stunned. However, there was a general belief that the Prime Minister's actions were ultimately for the country's benefit. People faced significant hardships during demonetisation. Yet, trust in the government prevailed, and gradually normalcy returned without descending into chaos.
10% Reservation for Economic Weaker Section

In 2019, the Modi government introduced a 10% reservation for economically weaker sections in the general category for government jobs and educational institutions. This required a constitutional amendment. Although reservations are a sensitive issue in India, this move received mixed reactions but continued to garner support. This many said could have snowballed into a Mandal Commission-like scenario, but the Modi govt took all parties into confidence and successfully implemented it.
Abrogation of Article 370

On August 5, 2019, the Modi government revoked Jammu and Kashmir's special status by abrogating Article 370. This unprecedented move was met with warnings from regional political leaders who were blamed for echoing what the BJP termed as 'pro-Pakistan sentiments'. During this period, the Modi govt sent NSA Ajit Doval to placate the local Kashmiris. The kind of support and confidence Kashmiris showed in the Modi government, stands as a testament how the NDA govt was successful in bringing J&K into the mainstream.
Supreme Court's Verdict on Babri Masjid

On November 9, 2019, the Supreme Court delivered a historic verdict on the Ram Janmabhoomi dispute. Despite initial apprehensions about potential unrest, the central government ensured a peaceful environment. The verdict was accepted nationwide without any untoward incident. It had been a longstanding issue. But the handling of the matter left even the Opposition in awe.
Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)

In 2019, alongside Article 370's abrogation and the Ayodhya verdict, Parliament passed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Protests against CAA turned violent in Delhi and led to communal riots. The government allowed peaceful protests but took strict action when necessary during the Covid pandemic to maintain order. Political motives also fueled violence during these protests. Eventually, calm was restored.
Farmers' Protest

During the Covid pandemic, farmers' organisations protested against three agricultural laws near Delhi and other locations. This became India's longest protest on the roads. On January 26, 2021, some elements attempted to incite violence at Red Fort under the guise of a tractor rally. The government and Delhi Police exercised restraint to manage these disruptive elements among protesters. In both the farmers' movement and anti-CAA protests, strict government action could have worsened the situation. Anti-social forces were active during these times. However, the government managed to prevent escalation effectively. The Modi government's handling of various crises demonstrates its ability to navigate complex situations with public support and strategic restraint.
