Ramesh, the lone survivor, was seated in row 11A, next to a left-side window in the economy section of the ill-fated aircraft - near an emergency exit. Currently, he is being treated at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

Recounting the sequence of events, the 40-year-old man said, "When the flight took off, within 5 to 10 seconds it felt like it was stuck in the air. Suddenly, the lights started flickering - green and white - then the plane rammed into some establishment that was there,"

Kumar's side of the aircraft plunged into the ground floor of the building. "There was some space," he recalled. "When the door broke, I saw that space and I just jumped out."

Opposite him, where the plane had rammed into a wall, the fuselage was sealed by a torrent of debris and a raging fire. None of the passengers in that section survived. "The door must've broken on impact," he surmised. "Near me, it was open. I ran. I don't know how."

"For a while, I thought I was about to die," Mr. Ramesh confessed to Doordarshan. "But when I opened my eyes, I saw I was alive. And I opened my seat belt and got out of there. The airhostess and aunty uncle all died before my eyes."

Now, under the 24-hour watch of the Gujarat ATS and the city crime branch, Kumar recovers in bed 11 of Ward B7 at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Among his visitors was Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who came to the hospital after surveying the crash site. "He asked me what happened," Kumar shared. "I told him I don't know how I lived. It all happened so fast."

The plane, which carrying 242 people, had 169 Indian nationals and 53 British citizens. There were also seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian on board the Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad.
