140 Crore Indians Worried About Safety Of Hindus In Bangladesh: PM Modi

The violence in Bangladesh found a mention in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day address, where he expressed hope for a swift return to peace and stability in the neighbouring country.

Speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort, he acknowledged the concerns of the Indian people over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus.

Hope Situation Gets Normal PM Modi On Bangladesh Violence

"As a neighboring country, I understand the concerns regarding the situation in Bangladesh," Modi said. "I hope normalcy is restored at the earliest. The safety of Hindus and minorities is a concern for 140 crore Indians. India has always wished for peace and prosperity in neighboring countries. We remain committed to supporting Bangladesh on its 'Vikas Yatra,' as we believe in the welfare of all humanity."

The political upheaval in Bangladesh took a dramatic turn on August 5 when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina abruptly resigned and fled to India. In the aftermath, violent mobs targeted minorities, including Hindus, across the country.

According to The New York Times, violence has erupted in several neighborhoods of Dhaka, as well as other large cities and districts. The report states that 60 people have been killed since Hasina's resignation. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council told Reuters that 45 out of the country's 64 districts have experienced attacks on Hindu homes, businesses, and temples. Reuters also reported that hundreds of Hindus are attempting to flee to India to escape the escalating religious violence.

Meanwhile, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, 84, was sworn in as the head of an interim government, following Hasina's resignation.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office at a ceremony in the presidential palace, Bangabhaban. Yunus' appointment came after widespread protests over a controversial job quota system led to violent unrest, plunging the country into chaos.
