Home Ministry Bans Jammu & Kashmir's Awami Action Committee, Ittihadul Muslimeen For 5 Years

The Government of India on Tuesday slapped a five-year ban on Jammu and Kashmir's Awami Action Committee (AAC) and Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM). The Central Ministry has taken the decision under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967 aiming to curb activities considered harmful to national security.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a notification explaining that members of these organisations have been involved in supporting terrorism and promoting anti-India sentiments. Such actions are seen as fuelling secessionist tendencies in the region, posing a threat to national unity.

Security Concerns

According to the MHA, the AAC, led by Umar Farooq, has engaged in activities that compromise India's integrity, sovereignty, and security. These allegations have led to its classification as an unlawful association under the UAPA.

Similarly, the JKIM, headed by Masroor Abbas Ansari, faces accusations of engaging in activities that threaten national unity. The group is also linked to terrorist support networks and anti-India propaganda efforts.

Government's Stance

The central government's decision reflects its commitment to maintaining national security by addressing threats posed by such organisations. By declaring these groups unlawful, authorities aim to prevent further destabilising activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

This move underscores the government's resolve to combat terrorism and secessionism effectively. It sends a strong message against any entities attempting to undermine India's territorial integrity or promote divisive agendas.
