Home Minister Amit Shah Inaugurates First Phase Of Lachit Barphukan Police Academy In Assam
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday inaugurated revamped police academy, named after legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan Police Academy, in Assam's Golaghat district.
The inauguration event was attended by Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and several other prominent leaders.

The police academy's first phase is a testament to modern infrastructure, featuring a variety of facilities aimed at enhancing the training experience for police trainees. Among these are smart classrooms, a weapon simulator, and research labs, all housed within a five-story building. Additionally, the premises boast a museum and a modern parade ground, further contributing to the comprehensive training environment.
The facility's design integrates both theoretical and practical training elements, ensuring a well-rounded education for future law enforcement officials.
The incorporation of a weapon training simulator is particularly noteworthy. This technology will allow officers and personnel to engage in realistic combat training scenarios without the associated risks, hazards, and costs. It's a forward-thinking approach to training that emphasizes safety and efficiency.
Following the inauguration, Home Minister Shah, alongside other dignitaries, took a guided tour of the facility. During this tour, they were briefed on the various features and capabilities of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy by DGP Harmeet Singh. The academy, sprawling over 340 acres, is undergoing renovations and expansions in two phases, with the first phase costing Rs 167.4 crore.
Looking ahead, the second phase of the academy's development promises to further enhance its capacity and facilities. This phase will focus on expanding housing infrastructure, with plans to provide residential quarters for 240 families, along with hostels that can accommodate 312 officers/personnel and 2,640 trainees. The projected cost for the second phase is Rs 425.48 crore, showcasing the government's commitment to building a world-class training center for police forces.
Shah's visit to Dergaon is part of a broader three-day tour covering two northeastern states, Assam and Mizoram, highlighting the central government's focus on the development and security of this strategic region. The Lachit Barphukan Police Academy's inauguration is a significant milestone in this journey, promising to equip law enforcement personnel with the knowledge, skills, and infrastructure they need to effectively serve and protect.
