HMPV Treatment: Should You Take Antibiotics? What’s The Best Way To Combat Virus?

HMPV Treatment: Former AIIMS Director Dr. Randeep Guleria emphasized that antibiotics have no role in treating Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory illness currently on the rise in the country. Speaking to IANS on Tuesday, Dr. Guleria, who is also the Chairman of the Institute of Internal Medicine, Respiratory, and Sleep Medicine at Medanta Gurugram, urged the public to focus on proper hydration and nutritious food for recovery. He explained that HMPV is not a new virus and typically causes only mild illness.

"HMPV is an old virus, not a novel one. It usually causes mild symptoms, but in vulnerable populations-such as infants, young children, the elderly, and those with comorbidities-it can lead to pneumonia and breathing difficulties, sometimes requiring hospitalization," Dr. Guleria noted.

He emphasized that HMPV is self-limiting and requires only symptomatic treatment. "You should take medications for fever, stay hydrated, and maintain good nutrition," he added, advising against visiting crowded places to prevent the spread of the virus.

The doctor mentioned that, while most cases have been found in children aged 3 months to 13 years, anyone can contract the virus, as it spreads via droplets, similar to influenza.

Dr. Guleria further said that the treatment for HMPV is mainly symptomatic, including hydration, paracetamol for fever, and anti-allergics for symptoms like cough and cold. He stressed that there are no specific antiviral medications, and antibiotics should not be used as it is a viral infection. He also highlighted the importance of infection control, including regular handwashing and following proper cough etiquette.
