HMPV Outbreak In Gujarat: Isolation Wards Set Up After First Case Reported

In response to Gujarat's first reported case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory illness with flu-like symptoms, the state government has established isolation wards in civil hospitals across Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, and Rajkot, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

Isolation Wards as a Precautionary Measure

The health department announced that a total of 45 isolation beds-15 in each of the three cities-have been set up as a precautionary step to handle any potential health emergencies. However, as of now, no new suspected HMPV cases have been detected, and all isolation wards remain vacant.

First HMPV Case in Gujarat

This development follows the confirmation of the state's first HMPV case, where a two-month-old baby admitted to a private hospital in Ahmedabad tested positive for the virus nearly two weeks ago. On Monday, the state health department issued a circular directing all government hospitals to be prepared for HMPV cases and announced the procurement of additional testing kits to speed up detection.

Government's Response and Advisory

Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Superintendent Dr. Rakesh Joshi reassured that the hospital is fully equipped to manage any situation.

"We have set up a 15-bed isolation ward at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital to deal with any emergency. Since there is no specific vaccine or medicine for HMPV, treatment will be provided based on symptoms. Testing kits have also been procured for early detection," Dr. Joshi stated.

Health Minister Rushikesh Patel revealed that a high-level meeting was held on January 4, where chief district health officers, civil surgeons, and hospital superintendents were instructed to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Additionally, the health department has issued an advisory urging people to follow preventive measures, such as:

  • Covering their face while sneezing or coughing
  • Avoiding crowded places
  • Maintaining distance from flu-infected individuals
  • Ensuring adequate sleep and hydration
  • Seeking medical advice for any respiratory distress

HMPV in India and Global Context

The Union Health Ministry has stated that HMPV is already circulating globally, including in India, and has been linked to respiratory illnesses in multiple countries. However, based on data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), there has been no unusual spike in cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) in India.

HMPV primarily causes flu or cold-like symptoms but can lead to severe complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia, especially among young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any potential outbreak.
