HMPV FAQs: Should You Be Concerned? All Your Questions Answered About Virus Surge In China
The sudden surge in infections in China has raised alarms about a possible virus outbreak reminiscent of the Coronavirus pandemic. During the ongoing winter season, authorities have identified several viruses responsible for the rise in respiratory illnesses.
According to Reuters, infections saw an uptick in December, with rhinovirus and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) being the primary pathogens detected.

Rising Cases of HMPV in China
The surge in HMPV cases coincides with colder weather and increased indoor activity, which are common factors that facilitate the spread of respiratory viruses. Health authorities note that this increase aligns with typical seasonal patterns.
China's National Disease Control and Prevention Administration recently confirmed a rise in respiratory infections, including HMPV, during the winter months. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) has not classified the situation as a global health emergency, the growing number of cases has prompted officials to enhance monitoring measures.
To improve detection and management, a pilot program has been launched to track pneumonia of unknown origin. This initiative ensures that laboratories and health agencies can report and manage cases more effectively, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
India's First case reported
Five cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in India. India has confirmed its fifth case of HMPV, with two children testing positive in Chennai, following earlier cases in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The new cases in Chennai bring the total number of infections in India to five, highlighting the virus's growing geographical reach. This respiratory virus, linked to respiratory illnesses and neurological symptoms, has raised concerns among health authorities.
The initial cases in Karnataka and Gujarat were identified through routine surveillance by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), as part of efforts to track respiratory viral pathogens. Meanwhile, China is also witnessing a surge in HMPV infections, further raising global concerns about the virus's spread.
The Union Health Ministry has stated that India is fully prepared to handle respiratory illnesses, with surveillance systems in place that indicate no unusual rise in cases.
What Is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)?
The virus is not new, but it has garnered attention due to a rise in cases, especially among children under 14 in northern China.
HMPV, discovered in 2001, Netherlands, is a respiratory virus known to cause upper and lower respiratory diseases. It primarily affects children under 14, senior citizens, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) describes HMPV as a respiratory virus that leads to both upper and lower respiratory infections. It can affect people of all ages, but young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
How is HMPV tested?
HMPV is diagnosed through rapid antigen detection methods, including immunofluorescent-antibody tests and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). These tests help identify HMPV antigens in infected cells.
Can the HMPV virus spread to other countries?
Hong Kong has reported some cases of HMPV, and neighboring countries like Cambodia and Taiwan are closely monitoring the situation. Cambodia's Communicable Disease Control Department has issued warnings, highlighting the virus's resemblance to COVID-19 and influenza.
Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control have expressed concern about the virus's higher risks for children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
In India, 8-month-old baby in Bengaluru with no travel history has been tested positive. Meanwhile, Officials have reassured the public, stating that there is no need for panic as HMPV is "similar to any other respiratory virus."
Should You Be Worried?
In most cases, HMPV improves on its own within a few days with home care. However, it can sometimes lead to serious complications. Those most at risk for severe illness include young children, adults over 65, and individuals with weakened immune systems. If you have any concerns about HMPV, it's important to consult your healthcare provider.
WHO's Stance on HMPV
The World Health Organization (WHO) has not classified the situation as a global health emergency, but the increase in cases has led authorities to strengthen monitoring systems. Currently, there is no evidence of a pandemic-like situation.
Is HMPV curable? Is there any vaccine?
Despite being discovered over two decades ago, no vaccine has been developed for HMPV. Medical experts recommend managing symptoms either at home or under hospital care. The virus remains a challenge to combat due to the absence of a definitive cure.
HMPV Prevention: Is there any Guidelines?
India has not reported any cases of HMPV, which is believed to be driving the surge in infections in China. Hence, the government has not issued any specific guidelines to follow as of now. However, Telangana and Kerala government has released an advisory.
According to CDC, patients can help prevent the spread of HMPV and other respiratory viruses by following these guidelines:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (refer to the CDC's Clean Hands Save Lives!).
- Avoid touching their eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Steer clear of close contact with sick individuals.
For patients exhibiting cold-like symptoms:
- Cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
- Wash hands often and thoroughly (using soap and water for at least 20 seconds).
- Avoid sharing cups, eating utensils, or personal items with others.
- Refrain from kissing others.
- Stay home when feeling unwell.
Additionally, cleaning potentially contaminated surfaces, such as doorknobs and shared toys, can help reduce the spread of HMPV.
