Uttarkashi Protests Erupt as Hindu Outfit Demands Demolition of Mosque Allegedly on Government Land
In Uttarkashi, a protest led by a Hindu group demanding the demolition of a mosque resulted in injuries to 27 individuals, including seven police officers. The protestors claimed the mosque was illegally constructed on government land. However, the district administration clarified that the mosque is old and built on land owned by the Muslim community.

The protest, organised by Sanyukt Hindu Sangathan, saw markets in Uttarkashi, Dunda, Bhatwadi, and Joshiyada shut down in support of the 'Jan Akrosh' rally. Protesters gathered at Hanuman Chowk, chanting slogans like "Jai Shri Ram," with Swami Darshan Bharti among them. They demanded the mosque's demolition.
Police Response and Clashes
To prevent protesters from reaching the mosque, authorities erected barricades on the Gangotri National Highway towards Bhatwadi. This led to heated exchanges between protesters and police. Despite attempts to remove the barricades, police maintained their position, leading to a sit-in protest on the highway where participants recited Hanuman Chalisa.
A scuffle ensued when protesters attempted to dismantle the barricades. During this confrontation, stone pelting began, prompting police to first use tear gas and then resort to a lathi-charge. Chief Medical Superintendent Dr Prem Pokhriyal confirmed that 27 people were injured during these events and have been hospitalised.
Investigation and Security Measures
Protesters accused some individuals of throwing stones at police as part of a conspiracy to escalate tensions. Uttarkashi Superintendent of Police Amit Srivastava stated that the stone pelting incident is under serious investigation. He assured that those responsible would be identified and face consequences.
Shrivastava explained that when protesters were redirected from another route, pushing ensued, leading to stone-throwing and necessitating mild police force. He reported that the situation has since stabilised and remains peaceful with adequate police presence in the city.
Following the protest, security around the mosque has been increased. Due to the closure of the Gangotri highway, pilgrims heading to Gangotri were rerouted via Tekhla from Badethi bypass.
