Himanta Sarma Hits Back At Mamata Banerjee After 'Burn' Remark, Says How Dare You Threaten Assam?

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswama criticised Mamata Banerjee for her comments protests in Kolkata to unrest in Bangladesh. He accused her of trying to incite violence India with her "politics of failure." Sarma tweeted, "Didi (Mamata Banerjee), how dare you threaten Assam? Don't show us your bloodshot eyes. Don't try to set India on fire with your politics of failure. It does not suit you to speak divisive language."

During the Trinamool Congress's student wing foundation day event, Mamata Banerjee attacked the BJP over violence during a bandh and the 'Nabanna Abhijan' protest march. She drew parallels between the agitation in Bengal and protests in Bangladesh, saying, "Some people think this (agitation) is similar to the protests in Bangladesh. I love Bangladesh; they speak like us (Bengal). Our culture is also the same. However, Bangladesh is a different country."

Political Reactions

BJP leader from Assam Piyush Hazarika also condemned Mamata Banerjee's remarks. He stated, "She can't bully, threaten us. I seriously condemn her. She can't control law and order in her state and is threatening us. It will not happen in Assam, I am assuring you." Union Minister and Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar added that her comments sounded like someone with an "anti-national" mindset rather than a leader holding a constitutional position.

The Trinamool government has faced severe criticism over its handling of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. The 12-hour bandh called by the BJP led to chaos as party workers clashed with TMC supporters and police across Bengal. A BJP leader, Priyangu Pandey, claimed that TMC supporters hurled bombs and fired at his car in Bhatpara.

Mamata Banerjee's Warning

Mamata Banerjee warned Prime Minister Narendra Modi against creating unrest in Bengal through his supporters. She said, "PM Modi, you are trying to create unrest in Bengal through your people. But remember, if you burn Bengal, Assam, the North-East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will also burn."

Banerjee's reference to Bangladesh was about student protests over a controversial quota system that led to Sheikh Hasina's government's fall. Her statement aimed to highlight cultural similarities while stressing that Bangladesh is a different country.
