High-level Inquiry Committee Formed: Speaker Om Birla Writes To MPs Over Parliament Security Breach

Taking cognizance of the recent Parliament security breach incident, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla on Saturday informed all members of the parliament about a 'High-level inquiry committee' that has been constituted to probe the lapse through a letter.

Writing to MPs, the speaker marked the event as an unfortunate incident and informed them that the report of the committee will be shared with the house, once generated. The high-level inquiry committee will also look into the reasons behind the security lapse. The committee aims to prevent the recurrence of any untoward incidents in the future, Birla in his letter to the MPs said.

Further in his letter, the speaker cleared the air on the suspension of 13 members of Lok Sabha stating "The suspension of the members is purely to uphold the sanctity of the House." "Linking the decision of the House to suspend some members" to the Parliament security breach incident, which happened on December 13, is "unfortunate and unwarranted".

Birla's letter to all MPs came after the Opposition demanded an explanation and resignation from the Union Home Minister Amit Shah following the Parliament security breach.

Reacting to the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla's letter, Union Minister & BJP MP Smriti Irani said,"Through the letter, the Speaker's agony and concern reached me...Even after the incident, the Speaker invited all political parties for their suggestions regarding security and proceedings of the House...As MPs, it is our responsibility to see that we do not hurt the dignity of Parliament. Speaker does not belong to one side but the entire country and serves the House as the custodian of the Constitution's dignity. His letter also reflected the pain that some MPs were suspended as they shredded the dignity of the House but the act against indiscipline is being given political colours."

The Delhi police on Saturday nabbed the sixth accused, who was on the run. A Delhi court has already sent other five accused on a seven-day police custody. According to the reports, the accused has been identified as Mahesh Kumawat, who provided logistical aid to his allies for entering the Lok Sabha.
