Hemant Soren's JMM Alliance Achieves Significant Victory in Jharkhand Elections Against BJP

In a remarkable political comeback, Hemant Soren's JMM-led coalition secured a second consecutive term in Jharkhand. The alliance won 56 out of 81 assembly seats, surpassing the majority mark of 41 seats. Despite an intense campaign by the BJP-led NDA, they managed only 24 seats. The BJP's aggressive strategy focused on criticising Soren's leadership and issues like alleged corruption and infiltration from Bangladesh.

JMM Alliance Wins Jharkhand Elections

The BJP's campaign, led by prominent figures including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, did not resonate with voters. The JMM effectively used the Adivasi card and garnered sympathy for Soren following his arrest. The party's promises of welfare schemes also struck a chord with the electorate. Analysts noted that despite anti-incumbency sentiments, the BJP failed to capitalise on them.

JMM's Electoral Strategy and Outcomes

JMM contested 43 seats and achieved its highest-ever tally by winning 34 seats. The Congress secured 16 seats, while RJD and CPI ML won four and two seats respectively within the INDIA bloc. The BJP, contesting 68 seats, emerged as the second-largest party with 21 wins but had a higher vote share of 33.18% compared to JMM’s 23.44%.

Hemant Soren retained his Barhait seat by defeating BJP's Gamliyel Hembrom with a margin of 39,791 votes. He had resigned as Chief Minister in January before being arrested in a money laundering case. Released on bail in June, he returned as Chief Minister in July, replacing Champai Soren.

Impact of Kalpana Soren and Other Political Dynamics

Kalpana Soren played a significant role in revitalising the JMM after her husband's arrest. She won the Gandey seat by defeating BJP’s Muniya Devi with a margin of 17,142 votes. Her political journey began earnestly following her husband's legal challenges, showcasing her resilience as a leader.

The BJP's campaign also highlighted the removal of Champai Soren as an insult to tribal leadership. However, Hemant Soren accused the BJP of spending over Rs 500 crore on negative campaigns against him. JMM’s populist schemes like Maiyan Samman Yojna and farm loan waivers resonated well with voters across Jharkhand.

BJP's Internal Challenges and Election Results

Internal conflicts within the BJP over nominations for turncoats further hampered their prospects. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the loss as "painful," despite victories in Assam by-elections. The RJD surprised many by winning four out of six contested seats, while CPIML Liberation secured two out of four.

The AJSU party faced near elimination, retaining only one seat in Mandu by a narrow margin of 231 votes. Its leader Sudesh Mahto lost the Sili seat. Babulal Marandi, state BJP president, won Dhanwar by 35,438 votes while former CM Champai Soren secured victory in Seraikela by 20,447 votes.

The elections saw a voter turnout of 67.74%, marking the highest since Jharkhand's formation in 2000. In contrast to this year's results, the JMM-led alliance had previously won 47 seats in 2019, taking power from the BJP which had secured 25 seats at that time.
