Rourkela Heatwave: 10 Suspected Heatstroke Deaths as Temperatures Soar

In a tragic turn of events, ten individuals succumbed to what is suspected to be heatstroke in Rourkela city, Odisha, on Thursday. The city, along with most parts of the eastern state, experienced a severe surge in temperatures, leading to these unfortunate deaths. Dr. Sudharani Pradhan, the director-in-charge (DIC) of Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH), reported that these deaths occurred within a mere six-hour span starting from 2 pm. "Eight people were dead by the time they reached the hospital, while the rest died while undergoing treatment here," Dr. Pradhan stated, attributing the likely cause to the intense heatwave sweeping through the region.

The victims exhibited body temperatures ranging from 103 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, significantly higher than normal levels, which Dr. Pradhan believes could have been a critical factor leading to their demise. "The history could not be studied as they arrive dead," she added, indicating the suddenness of these incidents. While some individuals are still receiving treatment, the exact cause of death awaits confirmation pending post-mortem examinations.

U K Sahoo, the Director of Public Health, confirmed the death toll but mentioned that the identities of the deceased are yet to be fully established. This incident comes as Odisha grapples with severe heatwave conditions, especially pronounced in its western regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that temperatures soared above 44 degrees Celsius in 12 places across the state on Thursday alone.

According to the IMD's evening bulletin, an alarming number of 19 locales registered maximum temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Districts such as Jharsuguda, Bolangir, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Malkangiri, Sundargarh, Nuapada, and Kandhamal are currently under the grip of this severe heatwave. Jharsuguda bore the brunt of this scorching heat as it recorded a staggering maximum temperature of 47 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest spot in the state.

Following closely were Titlagarh at 46.5 degrees Celsius, Bargarh at 46.3 degrees Celsius, and Sambalpur at 46.2 degrees Celsius. Other areas also faced extreme temperatures with Sonepur and Malkangiri both marking 45.6 degrees Celsius, Bhawanipatna at 45.5 degrees Celsius, Balangir at 45.3 degrees Celsius, and Hirakud at 45.2 degrees Celsius.

This spike in temperatures across Odisha underscores the harsh realities of extreme weather conditions and their dire impacts on human health. The authorities are likely to continue monitoring the situation closely as they attempt to mitigate further health risks associated with this ongoing heatwave.
