He Has Aged 7 Years In Last 5 Years: BJP Mocks JMM Chief Hemant Soren
In the lead-up to the Jharkhand Assembly elections, a stir has been caused by the nomination papers submitted by Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Representing the Barhait constituency once more, Soren's latest affidavit has raised eyebrows with its claim that his age has leapt from 42 to 49 in just five years, a revelation that has sparked a significant amount of debate and scrutiny.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a firm stance against this discrepancy, demanding that Soren's nomination be invalidated. The party's spokesperson in Jharkhand, Pratul Shahdeo, has publicly questioned the possibility of such an unusual increase in age over a relatively short period.

Beyond the age issue, the BJP has also highlighted a reported decline in Soren's declared income—from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 4 lakh—and accused him of failing to disclose several assets. These allegations have led to formal complaints being lodged with election authorities, signaling the BJP's intent to escalate the matter to the Election Commission for further investigation
Defence Amidst Allegations
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Soren's party, has countered these accusations, portraying them as an act of desperation by the BJP. JMM leader Manoj Pandey has assured that all documents submitted for Soren's candidacy were thoroughly verified and has branded the BJP's claims as unfounded. He interprets the BJP's focus on the affidavit as evidence of their fear of losing the upcoming election. Similarly, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal has dismissed the controversy as a mere diversionary tactic by the BJP, expressing confidence in the electoral victory and the formation of their government again.
BJP's Broader Criticisms
Further intensifying the political drama, Assam Chief Minister and BJP co-incharge for the Jharkhand Assembly elections, Himanta Biswa Sarma, launched a broader attack on the JMM, labeling its entire system as fraudulent. He criticized the party's governance and warned against the dangers of their re-election, mentioning specific grievances including inaction against controversial statements made by individuals like Irfan Ansari.
The unfolding electoral drama in Jharkhand is set against the backdrop of a two-phased election scheduled for November 13 and November 20, with the final count on November 23. The electorate has expanded since the last assembly elections in 2019, now boasting around 2.60 crore electors, which includes over 11.84 lakh first-time voters as well as more than 1.13 lakh individuals classified as persons with disabilities, third-gender individuals, and senior citizens above 85 years of age. The BJP, having lost to the JMM-led alliance in the previous election, is keen to regain its foothold in this tribal-dominated state.
In conclusion, the controversy surrounding Hemant Soren's age and the allegations of undeclared assets have added a layer of intrigue to the Jharkhand Assembly elections. While the BJP seeks to challenge Soren's candidacy on these grounds, both the JMM and Congress have dismissed these claims as baseless, viewing them as political strategies aimed at undermining their prospects. As the election process progresses, the debates and disputes between these parties underscore the intense political rivalry and the high stakes involved in the battle for Jharkhand's leadership.
