Haryana's Nayab Singh Saini Government Takes Floor Test, 4 JJP MLAs Defy Whip

A day after his oath as Haryana's Chief Minister, Nayab Singh Saini of the BJP presented a confidence motion in the state assembly. This move aimed to secure a majority for his newly formed government. Previously, the BJP had an alliance with Dushyant Chautala's Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), which dissolved over disagreements regarding Lok Sabha seat allocations. Following a meeting with BJP chief JP Nadda, Chautala decided to part ways with the BJP.

Despite this setback, Saini's government has garnered unexpected support, from some JJP members. With the Haryana assembly comprising 90 seats, a minimum of 46 is required to confirm a government's mandate. Although the BJP holds 41 seats, Saini has confidently submitted a list of 48 supporting members to Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, thanks to the backing from six independent MLAs and four dissident JJP members.

JJP MLAs Jogi Ram Sihag, Ishwar Singh, Ramkumar Gautam and Devendra Babli defy the whip ordered to skip the confidence motion and were present in the state assembly to support the newly formed government. But only after a few minutes, four JJP MLAs and an Independent MLA, Balraj Kundu, left the House.

However, not everyone within the BJP appears content with Saini's leadership. Anil Vij, the former Haryana Home Minister known for his outspoken nature, expressed his dissatisfaction by skipping the oath-taking ceremony. His absence sparked speculation and prompted comments from former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. Khattar remarked on Vij's tendency to react strongly but reassured that he would have participated in the oath-taking had he been present.

This development follows a period of political instability in Haryana, with the BJP seeking to consolidate its power in the state. The support from independent MLAs and JJP rebels has given Saini's government a crucial lifeline, allowing the BJP to maintain its governance in Haryana amidst shifting political alliances.
