Haryana Police To Revoke Passports, Visas Of Protest Farmers: Warning Issued

With a decision on resuming their march to Delhi expected to be made by farmers on Thursday, the cancellation of passports and visas of those involved in violence during the agitation is being sought by the Haryana Police.

Protesting farmers from Punjab have been camping at the Khanauri and Shambhu points on the Punjab-Haryana border since February 13 after their march to the national capital was halted by security personnel.

A decision on the march is anticipated to be taken by them on February 29. The farmers are demanding the acceptance of their demands by the central government, including a legal guarantee for a minimum support price (MSP) for crops and a farm loan waiver, as reported by India Today.

Farmers Protest 2.0 - The latest developments

1. The Punjab Police has registered a murder case against an unidentified person in connection with the death of Shubhkaran Singh (22), a native of Bathinda, on February 21. Clashes with protesting farmers at Khanauri resulted in twelve security personnel being injured.

2. A candlelight vigil in tribute to Shubhkaran Singh was held by various NGOs in Amritsar.

3. The registration of the FIR marks the conclusion of the stalemate between the farmers and the Punjab government and facilitates the post-mortem of the body. Farmer leaders insisted on the registration of an FIR before permitting the post-mortem.

4. Shubhkaran Singh's body is currently being held at a mortuary of Rajindra Hospital in Patiala and is expected to be cremated today.

5. Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher stated that the murder case has been registered under sections 302 (murder) and 114 (abettor present when the offence is committed) and announced that Shubhkaran Singh's body will be taken to Khanauri before cremation.

6. Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore and a government job for Shubhkaran Singh's sister.

7. Meanwhile, the farmers who have been involved in violence during the agitation have been identified by the Haryana Police, which intends to request the respective embassies and government to cancel their visas and passports.

8. "We have identified those involved in violence coming to Haryana from Punjab in the name of farmers' protest. We have identified them with CCTV cameras and drone cameras. We will request the ministry and embassy to cancel their visas and passports. Their photos, name and address will be given to the passport office. We are working on cancelling their passports," said DSP Ambala Joginder Sharma.

9. The 'Dilli Chalo' protest, spearheaded by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, is demanding the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations, pension for farmers and farm labourers, no hike in electricity tariff, withdrawal of police cases, and "justice" for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and compensation to the families of the farmers who died during a previous agitation in 2020-21.
