Haryana Mayors Get Power to Suspend Group C and D Employees
In a significant move towards decentralizing power to local city governments, the Haryana government has granted mayors of municipal corporations the authority to suspend Group C and D employees, including junior engineers. The decision was announced by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar during a meeting with mayors and senior deputy mayors of municipal corporations in Chandigarh on October 12.
Raising Administrative Sanction Limit

In addition to the enhanced suspension powers, the chief minister also announced an increase in the administrative sanction limit for mayors from Rs 2.50 crore to Rs 10 crore. This move will provide mayors with greater financial autonomy and enable them to undertake more significant development projects in their respective cities.
Empowering Local Governments
Speaking at the meeting, Khattar emphasized the importance of empowering local governments to ensure effective and efficient governance. He highlighted the significant steps taken by his government over the past nine years to decentralize power, particularly through the empowerment of Panchayati Raj institutions.
Decentralization of Power
Khattar stated that previous regimes concentrated power, but his government has adopted a different approach by decentralizing it. He believes that this approach will lead to better decision-making and improved public services at the local level.
Electric Air-Conditioned City Bus Services
During the meeting, Navdeep Singh Virk, Principal Secretary of the Transport Department, presented a plan to introduce electric air-conditioned city bus services in seven municipal corporations, including Rewari. To support this initiative, a new bus terminal with a charging station will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 115 crore. The operation of these buses will be outsourced, and the recruitment process will be handled accordingly.
The enhanced powers granted to mayors in Haryana, along with the increase in administrative sanction limits and the introduction of electric city bus services, represent significant steps towards modernizing and improving urban governance in the state. These measures are expected to enhance the efficiency of local governments, improve public services, and promote sustainable urban development.
