Haryana Doctors Strike: Healthcare Services Disrupted

Second Strike in a Week

This marked the second strike by government doctors in Haryana within the same week. Their initial strike occurred on Wednesday, highlighting the urgency and importance of their demands.

Strike Ends with Promise of Meeting

The protesting doctors resumed their duties on Friday evening after receiving assurances from the authorities that they would meet with the health minister on Monday. This meeting aims to address the concerns and demands raised by the doctors.

Haryana Civil Medical Services Association Leads the Charge

The strike was organized and supported by the Haryana Civil Medical Services Association (HCMS), which represents government doctors in the state. Their collective action underscores the seriousness of the issues they are facing.

Health Department Mobilizes Doctors

In response to the strike, the Health Department took proactive measures to minimize the impact on healthcare services. They revoked all types of leaves for doctors, mobilizing approximately 3,000 medical professionals, including consultants, senior consultants, National Health Mission doctors, medical officers from medical colleges, and community health officers.

Health Minister's Statement

Health Minister Anil Vij acknowledged the efforts made by the Health Department in mobilizing doctors to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services. He emphasized the importance of maintaining patient care during these challenging circumstances.

HCMS General Secretary Expresses Optimism

Dr. Anil Yadav, the general secretary of HCMS, expressed cautious optimism about the upcoming meeting with the health minister. He highlighted that the resumption of normal duties was based on the assurance of the meeting and the larger public interest. However, he acknowledged that OPD services remained suspended during the day, while emergency services continued to function.

Meeting with Director General of Health Services

On Friday, a crucial meeting took place between HCMS representatives and the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) of Haryana, Randeep Singh Poonia. Senior officials from the health department were also present. The meeting focused on addressing various demands put forth by the doctors' body, including the establishment of a specialist cadre, amendments to the PG policy, and pay revisions.

Progress on Demands

During the meeting, HCMS office-bearers were informed that the specialist cadre had been approved, and the state government was actively considering pay revisions and PG policy amendments. The statement released by the Health Department emphasized that the demands of the association were receiving top priority for resolution.

Indefinite Strike Averted

It is worth noting that HCMS had previously threatened an indefinite strike from Friday, with a complete shutdown of all services if their demands were not met. However, the assurance of a meeting with the health minister and the progress made in addressing their concerns averted this escalation.

Key Demands of the Doctors

The doctors' demands primarily revolve around the formation of a specialist cadre, a reduction in the bond amount for postgraduate courses, and the implementation of a dynamic assured career progression scheme that aligns with the benefits provided to central government doctors.

The strike by government doctors in Haryana brought attention to the challenges and demands faced by medical professionals in the state. While the strike caused temporary disruptions to OPD services, the assurance of a meeting with the health minister and the progress made in addressing their concerns offer hope for a resolution. The outcome of the upcoming meeting will be crucial in determining the future course of action and ensuring the well-being of both doctors and patients in Haryana.
