Harassed for dowry, woman kills children, commits suicide

Indore, Sept 9: Unable to take the torture meted out on her over dowry, 26 year old Shraddha Jat from Indore strangulated her two children to death before committing suicide. The incident took place in Lakshmi Nagar area under Aerodrome police station late on Monday night. Police have arrested two people, including the woman's husband.

A suicide note was found on the spot, but police have sent it for verification. SP (west) Kalyan Chakrabarthy said,"We are examining the handwriting of the letter to confirm it was written by the deceased or someone else."

The woman had mentioned in the letter that she was being tortured by her husband and brother-in-law for dowry. Chakrabarthy said,"We have arrested brother-in-law and her husband Yogesh Jat was arrested from another city." YOgesh Jat had fled his house after the incident and was untraceable for two days. Jat used to work as a flax agent in the Khajuri Bazaar area.

Shraddha's father Girish Desai said that her family members were demanding RS 5 lakh to pay off some debts. Desai said that Shraddha was bound to take the extreme step because of the torture.

On Monday night, JItesh, a resident of the same building saw Shraddha's body hanging from the ceiling. When he entered the room, he saw the two kids lying on the bed. Rupesh Dwividi, additional superintendent of police, said,"Only Shraddha and her kids were in the house when she took the extreme step." Preliminery investigations also show that she was tortured for the last couple of days.
