Gujarat Representation in Modi's Cabinet Falls to Six from Seven
In a significant reshuffle within the Narendra Modi government, the representation of Gujarat MPs has seen a slight decrease, moving from seven in the second term to six in the current cabinet. This change comes as part of the latest cabinet induction ceremony held on Sunday. Among those sworn in for a consecutive second term as cabinet ministers are notable figures such as Amit Shah, Mansukh Mandaviya, and S Jaishankar. However, this round also welcomed new faces from Gujarat, including state BJP chief and Navsari MP CR Paatil, party president and Rajya Sabha MP JP Nadda, and Bhavnagar MP Nimuven Bambhaniya.

Notably absent from the list is Rajkot MP Parshottam Rupala, a minister in the previous government who found himself at the heart of controversy due to remarks that offended the Khastriya/Rajput community during the Lok Sabha poll campaign. Rupala's political career includes serving as a three-term Rajya Sabha member and holding ministerial positions in both of Modi's previous governments. His roles spanned from being the Union minister of state for agriculture, farmers welfare, and panchayati raj between 2016 and 2021 to overseeing fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairying from July 2021.
Another notable exclusion is Devusinh Chauhan, the MP from Kheda, who previously held the position of Union minister of state for communication but was not included in the current cabinet. Similarly, Mahendra Munjpara, who served as the minister of state for women and child development in the preceding government, was not nominated by the party to contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Darshana Jardosh, who was the minister of state for railways and textiles in the second Modi government, also did not contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
The reshuffling of Gujarat MPs within the Modi government reflects a strategic approach towards governance and representation. The induction of new members alongside seasoned politicians underscores an effort to blend experience with fresh perspectives. As these changes unfold, it remains to be seen how this new composition will influence governance and policy-making specific to Gujarat and at a national level.
