Gujarat Rains: Fresh Spell Of Heavy Downpour Looms As Death Toll Rises To 47

Gujarat is facing an ongoing weather crisis as the state braces for yet another spell of heavy rain, expected to commence from Sunday.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that a depression formed in the Bay of Bengal is moving towards Gujarat and Maharashtra, bringing with it the likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Saurashtra, central Gujarat, and south Gujarat regions.

The rain is forecasted to continue until September 5.

The toll from the rains has been particularly severe, with the Jamnagar district reporting the highest number of fatalities at seven.

Ahmedabad and Anand districts each recorded six deaths, while Vadodara, Kheda, Mahisagar, Surendranagar, and Kutch districts saw three deaths each.

Gandhinagar, Bharuch, Dahod, and Chhota Udepur districts reported two deaths apiece, and Morbi, Dang, Aravalli, Panchmahal, and Devbhoomi Dwarka districts each registered one death.

It is important to note that the official death toll does not include additional fatalities that have occurred in the past few days.

In Vadodara, seven bodies were discovered recently, and in Morbi, seven people drowned. Furthermore, two people were electrocuted in Vadodara, adding to the grim situation.

As of Saturday, Gujarat has received 111% of its seasonal rainfall, indicating that the monsoon has been particularly intense this year.

With more rain on the horizon, the state is preparing for continued challenges, including potential flooding, landslides, and further loss of life.

Emergency services are on high alert as the region braces for the next wave of severe weather.
