Guillain-Barre Syndrome Claims Two More Lives in Maharashtra, Death Toll Climbs

Maharashtra recorded two more fatalities due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), an immune-related nerve disorder, bringing the total death toll to four, as per ANI reports.

One of the victims was a 36-year-old Ola-Uber driver from Pimple Gurav, Pimpri-Chinchwad. He was admitted to Yashwantrao Chavan Hospital on January 21 with suspected GBS and succumbed on January 30 due to complications, including severe respiratory distress and pneumonia, according to a statement from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Pune remains the worst-affected area, with 130 cases reported till January 30. Of these, 73 have been confirmed as GBS cases, with 20 patients currently on ventilator support. The affected individuals include residents from Pune Municipal Corporation, newly added villages, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune Rural, and other districts.

In response to the rising cases, the Union Health Ministry has sent a high-level team of experts from NCDC Delhi, NIMHANS Bengaluru, and the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, to assist local authorities. They are monitoring the situation and advising on necessary public health measures.

Water samples from various parts of Pune have been sent for chemical and biological analysis as authorities work to determine potential causes behind the outbreak.
What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare condition where the body's immune system attacks the peripheral nerves. It can lead to muscle weakness, loss of sensation, and, in severe cases, paralysis and breathing difficulties. While the condition is serious, most patients recover fully with proper medical care.
