In the past week, Pune has witnessed a surge in suspected cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder. According to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials, 26 suspected cases have been reported, with the patients mainly hailing from hospitals like Deenanath Mangeshkar, Navale Hospital, and Poona Hospital, as reported by Hindustan Times.

These individuals present symptoms such as limb weakness or paralysis, often following symptoms like diarrhea and abdominal pain, which are commonly linked to contaminated food or water. Samples from these patients, including blood, stool, saliva, and cerebrospinal fluid, have been sent for further analysis to the Indian Council of Medical Research - National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV).

What Is Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)?

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks parts of the peripheral nervous system, which is responsible for transmitting signals between the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body. This leads to muscle weakness, loss of sensation, and in severe cases, paralysis, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The symptoms of GBS can progress rapidly, often starting as weakness or tingling in the legs before moving upwards to the arms and face. In more severe cases, it may lead to paralysis of the legs, arms, and facial muscles, and in approximately one-third of cases, it affects chest muscles, making breathing difficult. These symptoms can escalate to life-threatening situations if the ability to speak or swallow is impaired.

A Closer Look at Pune's Cases

Most of the suspected cases in Pune have been identified among individuals aged 12 to 30, with only one reported case involving a 59-year-old patient, as per media reports. These individuals experienced gastrointestinal symptoms prior to the onset of neurological issues, which is a key characteristic of GBS in many instances. According to Dr. Vaishali Jadhav, Assistant Medical Officer of PMC, the health department is closely monitoring these cases and has asked hospitals to report any suspected instances of GBS.

Investigating the Cause

GBS is often triggered by bacterial or viral infections, and the connection between gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea and subsequent neurological symptoms is being closely examined. While viral infections, especially those caused by viruses like influenza, Zika, and even COVID-19, have been known to cause GBS, bacterial infections such as Campylobacter jejuni (commonly found in contaminated food) are also a known trigger.

Steps Taken by Authorities

PMC has alerted its health department to remain vigilant and has set up an expert panel, including scientists from ICMR-NIV and epidemiologists, to investigate the cluster of suspected GBS cases. The department has also initiated a detailed survey of the affected patients and is conducting follow-up surveillance. Dr. Nina Borade, chief of PMC's health department, reassured the public that despite the increase in cases, GBS is not a condition that will lead to an epidemic or pandemic. She emphasized that most people who receive timely treatment can make a full recovery.

Key Symptoms of GBS to Watch For

The most common symptoms of GBS include:

  • Weakness or tingling in the legs, arms, or face
  • Severe pain, especially at night
  • Difficulty swallowing, chewing, or speaking
  • Abnormal heart rate or blood pressure
  • Coordination problems or unsteadiness
  • Difficulty with vision or eye muscles
  • Pricking or "pins and needles" sensations in hands and feet
  • Issues with digestion or bladder control

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS): No Need for Panic

Although the rise in suspected cases of GBS in Pune has raised concerns, health experts assure that there is no immediate need for panic, as reported by Hindustan Times. With proper medical care, most individuals recover fully from the condition. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and experts are investigating the causes behind this recent spike. For now, residents of Pune are urged to stay alert and seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms related to Guillain-Barré Syndrome.
