UP Cabinet Minister Criticizes Greater Noida Officials over Non-Functional Emergency Alarm During Earthquake

During an official visit to Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister, Nand Gopal Gupta expressed displeasure at the non-functional emergency alarm system amid earthquakes. He urged officials to conduct mock drills for such emergencies.

In a recent incident that highlighted the lack of preparedness for natural disasters in India, Greater Noida Authority officials came under severe criticism from Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Nand Gopal Gupta. The issue was triggered by the failure of an emergency alarm system during an earthquake. This event underscores the importance of having functional safety measures in place to mitigate risks during emergencies and protect lives.

Incident Details

Faulty Emergency Alarm

The incident occurred on October 3rd when tremors were felt across parts of North India, including the National Capital Region. Four quakes within an hour were recorded between 2:25 pm and 3:19 pm, with their epicentre in Nepal. The most intense one had a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale, as per data from the National Centre for Seismology.

At this time, Gupta, who serves as Uttar Pradesh's Industrial Development Minister, was conducting a review meeting at Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority building's auditorium with several officials present. Sensing tremors mid-meeting, he promptly alerted everyone present and instructed them to ring the emergency bell so that evacuation could be initiated swiftly.

Alarm Failure Sparks Controversy

To everyone's dismay though, it turned out that the emergency bell was not functional. This lapse did not sit well with Minister Gupta who expressed his displeasure at this negligence towards safety protocols which are meant to ensure swift action during times of crisis such as these.

A Call for Better Preparedness

Gupta sternly warned officials about tolerating such negligence and stressed on taking immediate corrective measures to avoid any future mishaps. In light of this incident, he also urged authorities to conduct regular mock drills simulating earthquake scenarios so that they can handle any kind of emergency more efficiently.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of having fully functional emergency systems in place, and regular drills to ensure preparedness during natural disasters. The failure of an alarm system at such a critical juncture not only questions the safety measures in place but also highlights the need for their regular maintenance and inspection. It is crucial that these issues are addressed promptly to ensure public safety and instill confidence in disaster management systems.

In conclusion, this event underscores the urgent need for authorities across India to review their emergency response mechanisms and take necessary steps towards ensuring they function optimally when required. Regular checks, maintenance, and mock drills should be made mandatory to prevent any lapses that could potentially endanger lives during emergencies. As we continue to face unpredictable natural calamities, it becomes even more important for us as a society to equip ourselves better against them.
