Congress Claims Ban Lifted on Govt Employees Participating in RSS Activities
The Congress party on Sunday claimed that a recent government order has lifted the ban on government employees participating in RSS activities. The authenticity of this order, shared by Congress leaders on X, remains unverified. Congress General Secretary Communications Jairam Ramesh posted an office memorandum dated July 9, issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension.

Ramesh's post included a picture of the order. He stated, "Sardar Patel had banned the RSS in February 1948 following Gandhi ji's assassination. Subsequently, the ban was withdrawn on assurances of good behaviour. Even after this, the RSS never flew the Tiranga in Nagpur." He added that a ban was imposed in 1966 on government employees participating in RSS activities.
Historical Context and Recent Developments
The office memorandum referred to previous orders from November 30, 1966, July 25, 1970, and October 28, 1980. It stated that these instructions had been reviewed and decided to remove the mention of Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) from these orders. This purported decision marks a significant change in policy regarding government employees' involvement with the RSS.
Congress leader Pawan Khera also commented on the matter. Sharing a screenshot of the July 9 order, he said, "58 years ago, the central government had imposed a ban on government employees taking part in the activities of the RSS. The Modi government has withdrawn the order." This statement highlights the long-standing nature of the ban and its recent removal.
Political Reactions and Implications
Ramesh further remarked on the relationship between Prime Minister Modi and the RSS. He noted that relations between them have deteriorated since June 4, 2024. He pointed out that even during former Prime Minister Vajpayee's tenure, the ban remained in place. Ramesh sarcastically added, "The bureaucracy can now come in knickers too I suppose," indicating his disapproval of the decision.
The original order from November 30, 1966, banned government servants from associating with both RSS and Jamaat-e-Islami activities. This historical context underscores the significance of lifting such a long-standing restriction. The Congress party's reaction suggests they view this as a controversial move by the current government.
The veracity of this purported order remains uncertain as no official confirmation has been provided yet. The Congress party's claims have sparked discussions about the implications of allowing government employees to participate in RSS activities freely.
This development could have broader political ramifications given the historical context and current political climate. The removal of such a ban may influence public perception and political dynamics within India.
The situation continues to evolve as more information becomes available. Observers are keenly watching for any official statements or clarifications regarding this purported order.
This issue highlights ongoing tensions between different political ideologies and their impact on governance policies in India.
