Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan Emphasises Government's Commitment to Tribal Cultural Preservation
The central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is dedicated to the comprehensive development of tribal communities, according to Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan. He highlighted efforts to preserve the cultural identity and traditions of adivasis. Plans are underway to establish a tribal university in Maharashtra. Radhakrishnan shared these insights while inaugurating an Adivasi Mela in Pombhurna, organised by the Chandrapur district administration.

Radhakrishnan expressed pride in a tribal woman holding the highest constitutional position as the country's president. He noted that the region, known as Gondwana, is a reminder of the legacy of Gond rulers who governed it for centuries. The government is committed to tribal development under Modi's leadership, he stated. As Governor, Radhakrishnan serves as the guardian of scheduled areas with significant tribal populations.
Tribal University Plans
Plans for a tribal university in Maharashtra aim to transform adivasi communities by offering excellent education and modern skills. This institution will feature a medical college akin to AIIMS, an engineering and technology college like IIT, and a management school similar to IIM Ahmedabad. The university will provide world-class education primarily for tribal students, reserving 80% of seats for them and 20% for non-tribal students.
Radhakrishnan highlighted that tribals make up 9.35% of Maharashtra's population and are among the largest social groups nationally. Each community has unique traditions and history, with Bhil, Gond-Madiya, Katkari, Koli, and Warli communities enriching the tribal fraternity. He emphasised the importance of preserving these diverse cultures.
Empowering Tribal Women
A notable example of empowerment is a tribal woman entrepreneur in Gondia district promoting Gondi art through a self-help group (SHG). She earns a good income from selling paintings, serving as an inspiration for others. Radhakrishnan encouraged more enterprising women from tribal communities to follow her lead.
During the event, beneficiaries of Dr Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Yojana received cheques and land leases under Community Forest Rights. Tribal SHGs and outstanding students from adivasi communities were honoured by Radhakrishnan. These initiatives aim to uplift and support tribal communities in their pursuit of progress.
The Governor reiterated that every society has its own unique customs and history. He acknowledged the contributions of various tribal communities in enriching their cultural heritage. The government's efforts focus on ensuring that these traditions are preserved while fostering development opportunities for tribals across Maharashtra.
