Govt asked to ensure police do not interfere in civil disputes

Bano also asked the Chief Minister to ensure speedy trial of perpetrators of rape.
Kochi, June 4: The Kerala High Court today directed the state government to ensure that the government decision of March 1, 2012, prohibiting police from interfering in civil disputes, is implemented properly.

A division bench, comprising Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice P R Ramachandra Menon, directed the government to take suitable action against officers who violate the same. The order was issued on a petition filed by one Maniraj of Thiruvananthapuram, complaining of police harassment.

The Court said whenever a complaint is received, unless it indicates a prima facie commission of any offence, police shall not interfere in such matters in order to please the complainant or for some other favourable reasons. The duty of police is to maintain law and investigate crime, the court said.
