Government Looks To Bring Live TV To Mobile Phones Without Data Charges
The government is currently investigating the possibility of using 'direct-to-mobile' (D2M) technology to enable live TV channels to be streamed on mobile phones without the need for a data connection, according to reports. This technology, similar to direct-to-home (DTH), would allow mobile users to watch TV on their devices as they would through cable or DTH connections.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), and IIT-Kanpur are reportedly collaborating on this initiative.

According to reports, it is believed that telecom operators might oppose the proposal due to concerns about potential losses in data revenue, which is predominantly generated from video consumption. This could also impact their 5G business prospects.
An official, who chose to remain anonymous, said ET that the feasibility of this technology is being explored, and a final decision will be made after consulting all stakeholders, including the telecom operators.
Next week, a meeting is expected to take place involving representatives from the DoT, MIB, IIT-Kanpur, as well as members from the telecom and broadcast industries to discuss the matter.
In light of the imminent launch of 5G, government officials believe that content delivery should be integrated through both broadcast and broadband channels.
