Government Issues Cyber Alert, Directs RBI, Banks, and NPCI to Strengthen Security Amid India-Pak Tensions

According to a Moneycontrol report that cited senior government officials, the Finance Ministry has directed important financial institutions, such as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), major banks, and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), to increase cybersecurity readiness in the face of rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

A senior official attested to the fact that earlier this week, a thorough warning was released calling for increased safeguards for India's vital financial infrastructure. This comprises payment gateways, real-time gross settlement systems (RTGS), core banking networks, and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which handles more than 17-18 billion mobile transactions monthly, totalling ₹24 lakh crore.

Government Issues Cyber Alert Directs RBI Banks and NPCI to Strengthen Security Amid India-Pak Tensions

Officials cautioned that any disruption might have a significant effect on the economic stability and security of the country due to the size and significance of India's digital payments ecosystem. Following the April 22 terror assault in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which left 26 people dead, the geopolitical situation has gotten worse, prompting the cyber security alert. After Indian security forces repulsed a string of drone and missile attacks from Pakistan on May 8 that targeted military stations in Jammu, Udhampur, Pathankot, and other key locations, tensions increased even more.

The warning comes after "Operation Sindoor," a concerted military response by the Indian government on May 8 that involved airstrikes against nine terrorist launch pads located throughout Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The RBI and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) have separately encouraged financial institutions to remain vigilant against potential cyberattacks in addition to the Finance Ministry's alert. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's CERT-In is a key player in monitoring and addressing cybersecurity issues around the country.

Furthermore, the protection of vital digital infrastructure deemed necessary for national security is being regularly monitored by the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), a branch of the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO).

Preemptive action is essential in discouraging state-backed cyber warfare during times of conflict, officials said, despite the fact that no significant cyber breaches have been found to date.
