Jairam Ramesh Discusses Governance Shaped by Criticism of Jawaharlal Nehru Since 2014
Jawaharlal Nehru's influence continues to loom large over both his critics and supporters, according to senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh. Since 2014, governance in India has often involved maximum criticism of the country's first prime minister. Ramesh shared these thoughts at the launch of Aditya Mukherjee's book, "Nehru's India," which explores Nehru's vision for the nation.

The book, published by Penguin, delves into Nehru's understanding of India's history and cultural heritage. It also examines his views on communalism and secularism. Ramesh emphasised that defending Nehru's legacy is crucial, not only from old critics but also from new ones. He believes that Nehru's ideas need reinterpretation for a changing India.
Nehru's Legacy in Contemporary Governance
Ramesh highlighted how Nehru's legacy still influences current governance. He cited the recent passage of the Boilers Bill, 2024, in the Rajya Sabha as an example. During the debate, Nehru was mentioned as a reason for the bill's necessity. Ramesh found it surprising that the minister justified the bill by pointing out what was not done during Nehru's time.
Reflecting on historical events, Ramesh recalled the 1962 Chinese invasion when Nehru called an early Parliament session at the request of seven MPs, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Despite facing harsh criticism from various political parties, Nehru addressed the situation head-on. The then-defence minister VK Krishna Menon resigned amid criticism over handling the war.
Mixed Reactions to Nehru's Legacy
Ramesh noted that even those who contest Nehru's legacy cannot escape his shadow. Among them are individuals who accept certain aspects while questioning others. He observed that within the rightwing ecosystem, many are ambivalent about Nehru. Some acknowledge his contributions when pressed on specific issues.
The Congress leader pointed out that people recognise Nehru faced significant challenges due to the era he lived in. This acknowledgment comes from both supporters and critics who understand the complexities of his time in office.
Ramesh concluded by reiterating that Nehru's legacy remains a topic of discussion and debate in contemporary India. His ideas continue to shape political discourse and governance practices across the country.
