Gorakhpur tragedy: BRD college principal sent to 14-day judicial custody

Suspended principal of Bhagwan Ram Das (BRD) medical college RK Mishra and his wife Poornima Shukla were sent to 14 days judicial custody on Thursday by Gorakhpur Anti-Corruption court.

Mishra and his medico wife Purnima Shukla, who are named in an FIR lodged by the UP government, were picked up from Kanpur, where they had reportedly gone to consult a lawyer.

"The STF team then left for Gorakhpur to carry out further interrogation there," SSP, Gorakhpur, Anirudh Sidhartha Pankaj told PTI in Gorakhpur.

A homeopathic medical officer, Ms. Shukla has been accused of interference in the hospital adminstration and of seeking commission in purchase of surgical equipment.

Mishra had been suspended as principal of the college on 12 August after the deaths were reported and the same day he resigned owning moral responsibility for the incident, which acquired a political hue with the government drawing flak from the opposition.
