Gorakhpur To Get ₹115 Crore Floating Solar Project At Chilua Tal Under Coal India Scheme

Gorakhpur is set to get a 20 megawatt floating solar project, bringing a major clean-energy boost. The project, worth about ₹115 crore, will be installed on Mahesara Tal in Chilua Tal area. It will use around 80 acres of water surface under a scheme of Coal India Limited.

The contract for the floating solar project in Mahesara Tal has gone to Northern Express Infradevelopers Private Limited, a Gorakhpur-based company. The project falls under the Union Coal Ministry, through Coal India Limited. Officials state that the scheme supports national renewable energy goals and also strengthens local industry participation.

Gorakhpur floating solar project and tender process details

The tender for the Gorakhpur floating solar project drew interest from across India, with 25 companies taking part. Out of these, 17 were found technically and financially qualified. After financial evaluation on 25 May 2026, the nearly ₹115 crore contract was awarded to Northern Express Ltd. for the 20 megawatt plant.

Northern Express Infradevelopers Private Limited earlier handled the Mahesara Tal dredging project for Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited. Company Managing Director Nitish Tripathi said that the new floating solar project is a matter of pride for Gorakhpur. Tripathi added that it shows Uttar Pradesh’s rising role in national infrastructure development.

Gorakhpur floating solar project technology and benefits

In a floating solar project, panels are mounted on platforms that float on lakes, ponds or reservoirs. These platforms cover unused water surfaces, which then start producing electricity. The cool water below helps keep panel temperature lower, which can improve efficiency. The panels generate DC power, converted to AC through inverters and supplied to the grid.

Invest UP PSU head Subodh Dixit said that securing the Chilua Tal floating solar project reflects Uttar Pradesh’s growing strength in renewable energy and infrastructure. According to Dixit, this also highlights rising participation of regional enterprises in projects of national importance and supports Gorakhpur’s developing industrial ecosystem under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s one-trillion-dollar economy vision.

Gorakhpur floating solar project and integrated biofuel complex

Alongside the floating solar project, Gorakhpur is also seeing a large integrated biofuel and brewery complex at Dhuriyapar. The industrial area there is being developed by Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority. Shreyas Group plans to invest around ₹4,000 crore in this facility, adding another major energy-linked project to the region.

The proposed Dhuriyapar complex will produce about 750 kilolitres of ethanol and aviation fuel every day. This aviation fuel, made in Gorakhpur, is planned to be used for flights across India. The plant will also manufacture malt whisky and beer, adding multiple product lines within one large industrial site.

Project plans include a brewery capacity of 20 lakh cases, a malt production unit of 20 kilolitres per day, and a 35 megawatt co-generation power plant. Authorities expect the integrated biofuel and brewery complex to create about 4,000 jobs locally, while the floating solar project adds clean power and supports Gorakhpur’s wider industrial growth.
