Goa Nightclub Fire Investigation: Luthra Brothers Deported From Thailand To India

The Goa nightclub fire investigation moves forward as Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra are deported from Thailand for questioning. Authorities are reviewing licensing, safety standards, and potential violations at Romeo Lane, with multiple agencies engaged and a court appearance anticipated to determine accountability for the 25 deaths.

The investigation into the Goa nightclub fire has entered a crucial phase, with Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra being deported from Thailand to India. The brothers, accused in the blaze that killed 25 people, are returning to face questioning and further legal action.

Their Indian passports were earlier suspended, allowing authorities to complete deportation formalities in Thailand. Thai officials detained the brothers in Phuket for overstaying, after they allegedly left India just hours after the nightclub tragedy in Arpora, North Goa.

The fire broke out earlier this month at the nightclub operated by the Luthra brothers in Arpora. Twenty-five people died and several others were injured. Investigators are examining suspected breaches of fire safety standards, licensing rules and other mandatory conditions at the venue.

The Bombay High Court’s Goa bench is also examining the case after a civil dispute involving Romeo Lane, the property housing the nightclub, was turned into a Public Interest Litigation on December 16. The bench stated that “someone has to be held accountable in such kind of cases,” and asked the Goa government to clarify the status of the club’s licences.

The court noted that commercial activity at the site allegedly continued despite a demolition order and earlier complaints to the local panchayat. Advocate Rohit Bras de Sa, who represents the property owners, has been named amicus curiae and tasked with submitting a detailed affidavit on these issues.

The brothers are scheduled to land at Indira Gandhi International Airport around 1.45 pm on an Indigo flight. A Goa Police team, assisted by Delhi Police, will assume custody at the airport. The brothers will be kept under transit remand, taken to Goa for interrogation, and are expected to appear before the Mapusa Magistrate Court on December 17.

The Goa government has set up a dedicated legal group drawn from the Law and Prosecution Departments to conduct the case. Police have used Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which allows for prison terms of up to ten years.

Investigators are now gathering documents, statements and technical reports to build a detailed case against Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra. With the accused back in India and multiple agencies involved, the focus is on fixing responsibility for the 25 deaths and reported safety violations.
