Goa Officials Object to Lantern Festival Near Turtle Nesting Site

In a recent development, the proposed Lantern Festival, also known as Glow Fest, scheduled for May 25 at Morjim Beach in North Goa, has faced opposition from both the state forest and tourism departments. Morjim Beach, recognized as a crucial turtle nesting site, is under scrutiny due to concerns over the potential ecological impact of the festival. The event, organized by private entities, promises an evening of lantern lighting, live music, dance performances, and various activities.

Festival Opposition at Turtle Site

State Tourism Director Suneel Anchipaka highlighted that no application for permissions to hold the event had been submitted by the organizers. Anchipaka emphasized the state's commitment to regenerative tourism and stated that any event posing a threat to the environment or ecology would not be permitted. "Necessary action has been initiated in this regard," he affirmed.

Adding to the concerns, Deputy Conservator of Forest Prem Kumar addressed the potential risks to the local turtle population in a letter to the secretary of the state environment department. Kumar pointed out that a turtle hatchery operated by the forest department is located near Morjim Beach. He stressed that the entire beach serves as a nesting ground for Olive Ridley turtles, making it imperative to protect the area from disturbances that could arise from the festival.

Kumar also noted that hosting the festival near the turtle nesting site would contravene Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority rules. Official communications have been sent by the Range Forest Officer of Marine range, Wildlife and Eco-tourism North, Goa, to both the Member Secretary of the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority and the Police Inspector of Morjim, seeking necessary intervention to uphold the integrity of the turtle hatchery and nesting sites.

This situation underscores a growing concern for environmental preservation amidst tourism and entertainment activities. The opposition from state departments signals a move towards more sustainable practices that ensure the protection of critical wildlife habitats while promoting responsible tourism in Goa.
