Goa's Benaulim Zilla Panchayat Bypoll Witnesses 52% Turnout
In a significant electoral event, the Benaulim constituency witnessed a 52 per cent voter turnout in the bye-election for its zilla panchayat seat on Sunday. This election holds considerable importance for the opposition INDIA bloc, which has nominated AAP's Joseph Pimenta to contest against three independent candidates. These include Royla Fernandes, a Congress rebel, alongside Greyyfern Fernandes and Frank Fernandes. The State Election Commission confirmed that 52.12 per cent of eligible voters in Benaulim, a segment of the South Goa Lok Sabha constituency, participated in the polling process.

The opposition coalition, comprising Congress, NCP Sharad Pawar, Goa Forward Party, and others, has shown unanimous support for Pimenta. AAP Goa chief Amit Palekar highlighted that despite the BJP's official absence from the contest, it has subtly extended its backing to two independent candidates. Palekar accused the BJP of making concerted efforts to thwart the INDIA bloc's candidate from winning. The necessity for this bypoll arose following the disqualification of AAP leader Hanzel Fernandes over discrepancies in his caste certificate, with the seat being designated for OBC (Other Backward Class) candidates.
AAP MLA Venzy Viegas underscored the unity among opposition parties as they collectively oppose the candidates supported by BJP in this crucial election. Meanwhile, independent candidate Royla Fernandes has countered AAP's claims, asserting her strong backing from local Congress leaders. Royla's candidacy came after her resignation as Goa Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary and her pivotal role in challenging Hanzel Fernandes' qualifications, leading to his disqualification.
This bye-election is not just a test for the candidates but also a reflection of the political dynamics within Goa. With allegations of tacit support and counter-claims of unity and backing from major political entities, the Benaulim zilla panchayat seat has become a battleground for both local and state-level political influence. As the results await, this electoral episode adds another layer to Goa's complex political landscape.
