Goa: 1 Tourist Dead, 20 Rescued After Boat Capsizes In Calangute Beach

A tragic incident unfolded off Calangute beach in North Goa when a tourist boat capsized, resulting in the death of a 54-year-old man. Around 20 others were rescued from the Arabian Sea on Wednesday afternoon. The mishap occurred at approximately 1:30 pm, according to police reports.

Goa is a hotspot for tourists, especially during Christmas and New Year. Its lively celebrations, stunning beaches, and vibrant atmosphere attract many visitors. This unfortunate event has cast a shadow over the festive season.

Rescue Efforts and Hospitalisation

Drishti Marine, a government-appointed lifesaving agency, reported that the boat overturned about 60 meters from the shore. A family of 13 from Khed in Maharashtra was among those on board. "Eighteen lifesavers on duty quickly assisted the passengers and brought them safely to land," said a spokesperson.

First aid was administered to the injured passengers, while those critically hurt were taken to a hospital by ambulance. Among the 20 passengers, two children aged six and seven and two women aged 25 and 55 were revived and hospitalised. Notably, two passengers were not wearing life jackets.

Safety Measures and Previous Incidents

A senior police official confirmed that all passengers wore life jackets except for two individuals. The group included children as young as six years old. "A 54-year-old man died, and 20 others were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment after the boat they were travelling in capsized," he stated.

This incident follows another maritime accident just a week prior when a Navy craft collided with the passenger ferry 'Neel Kamal' near Mumbai's coast during engine trials. That crash resulted in 15 fatalities among over 100 passengers heading to Elephanta Island.
