Getting 'Alert Messages' From SBI? You May Fall Prey To Online Fraud | Deets Inside
The Fact Check Unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB), under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, has issued a warning State Bank of India (SBI) customers about fraudulent messages.
These messages, sent via SMS and WhatsApp, falsely claim to help redeem SBI reward points by downloading APK files. PIB clarified that SBI never sends such links or APKs through these channels.

"Beware! Did you also receive a message asking you to download & install an APK file to redeem SBI rewards #PIBFactCheck @TheOfficialSBI NEVER sends links or APK files over SMS/WhatsApp Never download unknown files or click on such links," reads the post.
Understanding the fraudulent message
The fraudulent message reads: "Dear Value customer, Your SBI NetBanking Reward Points (Rs 9980.00) will expire today! Now Redeem through SBI REWARD App Install & claim your reward by cash deposit in your account. Thankyou Team-SBI." This message is designed to trick recipients into downloading malicious software.
Tips to protect yourself from SMS fraud
To safeguard against such scams, avoid clicking on links or providing personal information to unfamiliar numbers. Legitimate businesses rarely demand immediate action via SMS. Hover over links without clicking to verify their authenticity; avoid them if they appear unfamiliar or misspelled.
Never share passwords, credit card numbers, or personal details via SMS. Enabling two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your accounts. Be cautious when using free Wi-Fi networks as they can be less secure and easier for hackers to intercept information.
Ensure your phone's operating system and apps are up-to-date with the latest security patches. If you receive a suspicious text, report it immediately to the relevant authorities.
PIB's alert aims to protect SBI customers from falling victim to these scams by raising awareness about the tactics used by fraudsters. Always verify any communication claiming to be from your bank directly with the bank itself before taking any action.
By following these safety tips and staying vigilant, you can protect yourself from potential fraud and keep your personal information secure.
