Gangster Mohammad Shorab Arrested in Kolkata After Months on the Run from Tihar Jail

Mohammad Shorab, a gangster serving life for murder, was arrested in Kolkata after evading parole. He had been living undercover as an app-cab driver.

A notorious gangster serving a life sentence for murder was apprehended in Kolkata after evading authorities. Mohammad Shorab, originally from Uttar Pradesh, had been living under the guise of an app-cab driver. He was captured by a joint team of Kolkata and Delhi Police on Ripon Street. Shorab had absconded after his parole ended, choosing to hide in Topsia, east Kolkata.

Shorab's criminal record is extensive, involving around 20 cases, including six to seven murders and several robbery attempts in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. In 2005, he allegedly committed three murders within an hour during Eid and even taunted the then Lucknow SSP over the phone to catch him. This led to his arrest for those crimes.

Life Sentence and Parole Violation

In 2011, Shorab and his brother were arrested again in Delhi's Karol Bagh after a jewellery store robbery that resulted in murder. A Delhi court sentenced them to life imprisonment, leading to their incarceration in Tihar Jail. Shorab was released on parole on June 26 due to his wife's illness but failed to return by July 4.

After skipping parole, Shorab fled to a relative's house in Topsia. The police formed a special investigation team (SIT) comprising Delhi and UP Police to track him down. His capture marks the end of his brief period of freedom after violating parole conditions.

Criminal Activities and Arrest

Shorab operated alongside his brothers, Selim and Rustam, forming a gang involved in various criminal activities. His criminal history includes multiple murders and robberies, making him a significant target for law enforcement agencies. The police's coordinated efforts led to his eventual arrest in Kolkata.

The arrest highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement when dealing with hardened criminals who exploit parole opportunities. It underscores the need for stringent monitoring of parolees to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The authorities' swift action ensured that Shorab could not continue his criminal activities while on the run. His capture serves as a reminder of the persistent efforts required to maintain law and order against seasoned offenders.
