Ganga Expressway: A Major Infrastructure Project Enhancing Connectivity Across Uttar Pradesh

The Ganga Expressway, a significant infrastructure project in Uttar Pradesh, spans 594 kilometres. This six-lane expressway, which can be expanded to eight lanes, connects Meerut in the west to Prayagraj in the east. It is designed for a top speed of 120 km/h, aiming to cut travel time between these cities from 10-12 hours to about 6 hours.

Once operational, the expressway will link 518 villages across 12 districts in Uttar Pradesh. The route begins at Bijauli village on the Meerut-Bulandshahr National Highway (NH 334) and ends near Judapur Dadu village on National Highway 19 in Prayagraj. This connectivity will significantly reduce travel time across the region.

Infrastructure and Connectivity

The expressway integrates with major corridors like the Purvanchal Expressway and Yamuna Expressway. It also connects with the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and Delhi-Meerut Expressway, enhancing both regional and national connectivity. This network positions Uttar Pradesh as a central hub in northern India.

Featuring world-class infrastructure, the expressway includes two main toll plazas at Meerut and Prayagraj, along with 15 ramp toll plazas. It also has nine public convenience centres, 14 major bridges, and 126 minor bridges. Additionally, there are 28 flyovers, seven rail overbridges, and 929 culverts.

Economic Impact

The Ganga Expressway is expected to boost industrial and commercial growth along its corridor. It will facilitate faster movement of goods and people while spurring real estate development. The project aims to enhance accessibility and contribute positively to Uttar Pradesh's economic landscape.

A unique feature of this expressway is a 3.5-kilometre emergency airstrip at Shahjahanpur for Air Force use. Future plans include extending it by 120 km from Meerut to Muzaffarnagar and further eastward to Ballia, increasing its total length beyond 1,000 km.

Environmental Considerations

Environmental sustainability is a key focus of the project. Over 1.8 million saplings have been planted along the route to promote greenery. Additionally, fly ash is used in construction to minimise carbon emissions. The greenfield design reduces congestion while ensuring modern road safety standards.

Despite rain causing temporary delays in service lane construction, work has resumed promptly. Officials are confident that progress remains on track for completion by November 2, 2025. This timeline was emphasised during a field inspection by Prayagraj District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma.

Project Progress

The main road section of the expressway is now complete according to News24 reports. Other features like service roads, toll plazas, tree planting along the route, display boards, street lighting are either finished or nearing completion.

Security cameras are being installed every kilometre for improved safety and monitoring on the expressway. Once fully operationalised it will greatly enhance transport across Uttar Pradesh making journeys quicker easier while boosting trade regional development.
