Significance of the 10-Day Ganesh Utsav
The 10-day celebration of Ganesh Utsav is rooted in ancient scriptures and mythology. It is believed that Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth anniversary of Ganapati, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to a popular mythological story, Sage Vedavyasa once called upon Lord Ganesha to transcribe the epic Mahabharata.
As Sage Vyasa recited the verses, Ganapati wrote them down continuously for ten days, without interruption, accumulating a layer of dust from his tireless effort. On the tenth day, known as Anant Chaturdashi, Lord Ganesha bathed in the Saraswati River, cleansing himself. This event is believed to have established the tradition of celebrating Ganesh Utsav for ten days.
The festival not only commemorates the birth of Lord Ganesha but also involves meticulous worship and rituals, during which devotees believe that all their tasks and endeavors are blessed with success by Lord Ganesha. This year, as Ganesh Chaturthi is observed on September 7, 2024, devotees across the world will participate in the festivities, seeking the blessings of Lord Ganesha for prosperity, wisdom, and happiness.
