Gallantry Awardee Capt Anshuman Singh's Legacy of Bravery Honoured
A grieving Smriti, dressed in a white saree, accepted the Kirti Chakra on behalf of her late husband, Capt Anshuman Singh. The award was presented by President Droupadi Murmu during an investiture ceremony on Friday. Capt Singh, from the Army Medical Corps, was honoured posthumously for his exceptional bravery.

Smriti shared her memories in a video posted by the Ministry of Defence spokesperson on X. She recalled her husband's words, "I would die with a brass on my chest. I would not die an ordinary death." Capt Singh's heroic actions during a major fire last July led to his untimely demise.
Exceptional Bravery Recognised
President Murmu awarded 10 Kirti Chakras, seven posthumously, to Army and paramilitary personnel for their extraordinary valour. The Rashtrapati Bhavan shared a photograph of Smriti accepting the award. They also posted on X about Capt Singh's bravery in rescuing many people during the fire incident.
Smriti fought back tears as she spoke about their relationship in the video. "We met on the first day of college. It was love at first sight," she said. Their relationship began at an engineering college before Capt Singh joined the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC).
A Love Story Cut Short
The couple endured an eight-year long-distance relationship before marrying. Tragically, within two months of their marriage, Capt Singh was posted to Siachen. Smriti recounted their last conversation on July 18 about their future plans.
"On the 19th morning last year, I got up and received a call that he is no more," Smriti said. She has struggled to accept his loss since then. "For the first seven to eight hours, we could not accept that anything of that sort has happened," she added.
Heroic Sacrifice
Smriti acknowledged her husband's heroism despite her grief. "He gave up his life and family so that the other three army families could be saved," she said proudly. Holding the Kirti Chakra has made her realise the reality of his sacrifice.
The video shared by the Ministry of Defence spokesperson has been widely circulated on social media. It highlights Smriti's emotional journey and Capt Singh's bravery, resonating with many viewers.
Capt Anshuman Singh's story is one of courage and selflessness. His actions during the fire incident exemplify the highest standards of bravery and dedication to duty.
