Former Village Head Shot During Puja Ceremony in Mau Over Old Enmity: Congress Calls for Action

A 60-year-old former village head and Congress worker was injured in a shooting during a ceremonial event on Saturday. The incident, allegedly due to an old feud, occurred at Nilesh Yadav's house in Devkali Bishunpur village, Kopaganj area, according to police reports.

Ramesh Rai, the victim, was shot in the head and has been referred to Varanasi for medical treatment. Additional Superintendent of Police Mahesh Singh Atri stated that Ashish Rai, aged 25 and from the same village, allegedly approached from behind and fired at the former village head.

Police Response and Investigation

The attack is believed to stem from a longstanding enmity. In response, police have increased their presence in the area and are conducting raids to apprehend the suspect. Efforts are underway to ensure the accused is caught promptly.

Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai condemned the attack and criticised the ruling BJP. He expressed his disapproval on X, stating, "The news of the fatal attack on former village head and Congress worker Ramesh Rai in Devkali, Kopaganj, Mau, in broad daylight is sad and reprehensible."

Political Reactions

Ajay Rai further criticised the current administration by saying that criminals have become more influential than the government under BJP's rule. He demanded swift action against those responsible for the attack and called for severe punishment.

In addition to his criticism, Ajay Rai also expressed his wishes for Ramesh Rai's quick recovery. The incident has sparked significant concern among political circles regarding safety and law enforcement effectiveness in the region.
