Former PM Gowda announces retirement, hands over reins to grandson Prajwal

New Delhi, Jan 2: Former Prime Minister and presently a Member of the Parliament, H. D. Deve Gowda has quit the electoral politics. On Sunday, Gowda announced his retirement after stating the fact that his grandson Prajwal, son of former minister and Holenarsipur MLA HD Revanna will look after his constituency, Hassan.

Gowda, national president of JD(S) said that Prajwal who is engineer from Bangalore Institute of Technology and his father HD Revanna will oversee all his responsibilities in the Hassan constituency.

Former PM Gowda announces retirement

On Sunday, 24-year old Prajwal formally started his political career after becoming a member of the party. It is being said that Gowda wants to relieve himself with party responsibilities and because of this reason he has handed over party reins to sons and grandson.

Other son of the Gowda, H D Kumaraswamy is presently state president of the JD(S) . In 2008, he headed the BJP-JD(S) coalition government in the state for 20 months.

On asking about this new development, Prajwal said, "I have been working hard for the party for the last two-and-a-half years and I want to strengthen it by bringing in more youth and women into it. I became a member to kickstart the membership drive in the state.

Born on 18 May 1933 in Hassan district, Gowda is a Civil Engineer. He started his political career from Congress in 1952. In 1962, he was elected MLA from Holenarasipura constituency as an independent candidate. The Janata Dal came into existence in 1988 after merger of Janata party with smaller opposition parties. Vishwanath Pratap Singh became the first Prime Minister of India from Janata Dal when he headed the National Front government in 1989.
