Ex-ISRO Scientist Nambi Narayanan Shares His Ordeal of Clearing Name in Espionage Case at NSUT Convocation
Former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan recounts his struggle to clear his name in an espionage case from 1994. After a 24-year legal battle, he was cleared in 2018. He shared this story as the chief guest at the first convocation of Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT).
Former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, who was embroiled in a high-profile espionage case back in 1994, addressed the students of Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT) at their first convocation on September 15. In his keynote speech, Narayanan encouraged students to face their challenges with unwavering determination and perseverance.
Narayanan's Inspiring Message

In his address, Narayanan shared his personal journey of battling false charges that had threatened to tarnish his reputation and career. He said, "If you have the determination, I am sure you are bound to succeed and there is no reason for you to worry. I was pushed into a corner with some false charges ... I had to fight the entire nation -- the Centre, state government, media, the people and society. I single-handedly fought it and won the case."
The Espionage Case
The infamous espionage case dates back to 1994 when allegations were made against two scientists including Narayanan and four others including two Maldivian women. They were accused of transferring confidential documents pertaining to India's space programme to foreign countries.
A Long Legal Battle
Narayanan recounted how he spent nearly a quarter-century fighting these accusations in court before finally clearing his name in 2018. Despite achieving what he wanted within four years after being charged - that is getting acquitted - he continued fighting for another twenty years seeking justice against those who falsely implicated him.
"Of course, it took a long time and most interestingly if you look at that case," Narayanan said during his address at NSUT convocation ceremony. "My problem was over in four years. I got what I wanted but the remaining 20 years; I was fighting to identify those who falsely implicated me."
Conclusion
Narayanan's story serves as a powerful example of resilience and determination. His experience offers valuable lessons for individuals, particularly young students, about the importance of standing up for truth and justice, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Narayanan's address at the NSUT convocation was not just a recounting of his ordeal but also an inspiring message that encourages future generations to face their challenges head-on with determination and courage.
