Former Congress Minister Dipak Saxena Joins BJP, Citing Modi's Influence
In a significant political shift, former Madhya Pradesh minister and four-time Congress MLA from Chhindwara, Dipak Saxena, along with his supporters, transitioned to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday night. This move was officially welcomed by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, marking a notable acquisition for the BJP from a stronghold of the Congress party.

Dipak Saxena, who has been a close aide of senior Congress leader Kamal Nath, expressed his motivation for joining the BJP was driven by the impactful works of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, CM Yadav, and state BJP chief VD Sharma. This political transition comes after Saxena's resignation from the Congress on March 22. Notably, this shift follows his son Ajay Saxena's earlier move to the BJP.
The backdrop to these transitions is marked by internal dynamics within the Congress party in Chhindwara. Ajay Saxena articulated concerns over the direction of the party under Nakul Nath, son of Kamal Nath and sitting MP from Chhindwara. He highlighted issues of marginalization and neglect towards party workers and his father over the past six years as key reasons for their departure from Congress.
Dipak Saxena had previously vacated his Assembly seat in 2018 to facilitate Kamal Nath's entry as an MLA when he became the Chief Minister. Adding to the series of defections, Kamal Nath loyalist and Amarwara MLA Kamlesh Pratap Shah also joined the BJP on March 29. Shah has been a three-time winner from the Amarwara seat.
The defections come at a critical time as the BJP intensifies its efforts to consolidate its presence in Chhindwara district. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Chhindwara was the only seat in Madhya Pradesh where Congress managed a win. The upcoming assembly polls in November 2023 have seen all seven assembly seats of Chhindwara district being won by Congress. However, with these strategic moves, BJP aims to challenge this stronghold.
The electoral battle in Chhindwara is set to witness Nakul Nath from Congress going head-to-head with BJP's Vivek Sahu. The scheduled polls on April 19 are anticipated with keen interest as these developments unfold.
