Flushed Clothes, Polythene Bags Clogged Air India Plane's 8 Out Of 12 Lavatories
On a recent flight from Chicago to Delhi, Air India was compelled to turn back to its departure city after an unusual situation arose mid-flight. The airline disclosed that several items, including polythene bags, rags, and clothes, had been improperly disposed of in the toilets, leading to a significant malfunction. This incident left only one operational toilet for the over 300 passengers aboard, significantly compromising their comfort and safety. The decision to return was primarily driven by the inaccessibility of European airports for diversion due to nighttime operational constraints.
Air India, in a statement, shed light on the peculiar circumstances that led to the diversion of its Chicago-Delhi flight on March 5, 2025. The airline revealed that out of the 12 toilets on the aircraft, eight had become blocked and inoperative less than two hours into the journey due to passengers flushing inappropriate items down them. This unforeseen issue prompted the flight crew to make the difficult decision to head back to Chicago O'Hare International Airport for the welfare of those on board.

Investigation and Airline Response
The airline's spokesperson extended their empathy towards the passengers affected by this inconvenience, acknowledging the discomfort caused by the limited access to lavatory facilities. The flight, which had ventured over the Atlantic Ocean, faced the challenge of finding suitable diversion points. European airports, which could have served as alternatives, were not viable options due to nighttime flying restrictions, necessitating the return to Chicago. This decision underscored Air India's commitment to passenger safety and comfort despite the extended duration of the journey.
Reports from the aviation community, including a detailed account by View From The Wing, noted that the flight was four-and-a-half hours into its journey, above Greenland, when the decision to turn back was made. The return trip to Chicago mirrored the time taken initially, culminating in a nearly 10-hour ordeal for the passengers.
In the aftermath of the incident, Air India conducted a thorough investigation, uncovering that this was not an isolated occurrence. The investigative teams discovered a variety of objects, such as blankets, innerwear, and diapers, flushed down the toilets on other flights. These findings prompted the airline to issue a plea to passengers, urging them to utilize the lavatories responsibly and only for their intended purposes. Through this statement, the airline aims to prevent similar incidents in the future, ensuring the smooth operation of its services and the comfort of its passengers.
