Flight Chaos In Delhi: IndiGo And Air India Issue Urgent Travel Advisories

Amid heavy rainfall in Delhi, several domestic airlines, including IndiGo and Air India, issued critical travel advisories to passengers, urging them to carefully monitor their flight statuses before heading to Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).

The advisories came in response to IGIA's decision to suspend all departures from Terminal 1 and close check-in counters due to structural damage caused by the severe weather conditions.

According to a spokesperson from Delhi Airport (DIAL), the incident unfolded early in the morning when a section of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt of Terminal 1 collapsed around 5 am. This collapse resulted in injuries to several individuals, prompting an immediate response from emergency personnel who are currently engaged in providing necessary medical aid and assistance.

The rescue operations remain ongoing amidst the challenging circumstances posed by the heavy rainfall. In light of these developments, IndiGo issued a comprehensive statement on June 27, informing passengers about the cancellation of flights and presenting alternative options for rebooking or refunds.

They emphasized that the operational disruptions stemmed from the structural damage at Terminal 1, which not only hindered passenger access but also affected flight operations across their network. Similarly, Air India also issued a detailed travel advisory, cautioning passengers about potential flight delays to and from Delhi Airport due to the ongoing heavy rainfall.

They advised passengers to proactively check their flight statuses through their website or customer service channels before departing for the airport. Additionally, they encouraged travellers to allocate sufficient travel time considering the expected congestion on roads caused by inclement weather.

The incident occurred amidst a spell of persistent heavy rains in Delhi-NCR, exacerbating travel challenges and underscoring the need for heightened vigilance and precautionary measures from both airlines and passengers, as reported by India.com. The adverse weather conditions have significantly impacted air travel operations, necessitating collaborative efforts to manage and mitigate the disruptions effectively.

As rescue and recovery efforts continue at Terminal 1, authorities, including Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, have been actively monitoring the situation. Their focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected individuals while working towards restoring normalcy in airport operations as swiftly as possible.
