"Fire non-Kannadiga engineers from Namma Metro," KDA tells K'taka CM

The protests against Hindi imposition is turning ugly by the day in Karnataka

The Kannada Development Authority has asked Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to fire non-Kannada speaking engineers from the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited. In a letter, KDA members have urged that preference should be given to locals in Namma Metro.

"There are seven non-Kannadiga chief engineers in BMRCL. Despite the fact that Karnataka has the highest number of engineering colleges in the country, there are not enough Kannadigas. We have a lot of qualified Kannadigas to do the job. Hiring so many non-Kannada speaking engineers is in violation of the Sarojini Mahishi report. The state government must ensure that these engineers are relieved," the letter reads.

Members of the Kannada Development Authority led by chairman S G Siddaramaiah visited BMRCL office on Tuesday. A couple of days after their visit, they have written to the Chief Minister, the Chief Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary for urban development.

The letter also demands that locals be given priority in all wings including housekeeping and security.

The government while making it clear that it was against Hindi imposition, is yet to consider the KDA's letter. The BMRCL meanwhile, has stated that the engineers have been hired purely on the basis of merit and technical knowledge. The BMRCL hit the headlines when it used Hindi signages at Metro stations in Bengaluru owing to a letter from the union government.
